Traditional Ashtanga Yoga in Los Angeles
The AYLA Collective is a space for sincere Ashtanga Yoga practice rooted in lineage, humility, and continual learning. We exist to foster a grounded, devoted community in Los Angeles—one shaped by discipline, shared responsibility, and care for the tradition during a time of profound transition.
AYLA was formed in the aftermath of the pandemic, when many long-standing yoga spaces closed and practitioners were left without a home. In Los Angeles, the closure of the shala led by Noah Williams—a teacher of teachers who upheld traditional Ashtanga practice for decades—marked the end of an era and revealed how fragile community can be when physical spaces disappear. AYLA emerged not to replace what was lost, but to create a place where practice, study, and connection could continue with integrity.
We recognize that we are living within a broader tide of change in Ashtanga Yoga itself. The passing of Sharath Jois in 2024 marked a turning point for the global community—one that calls for reflection, maturity, and collective stewardship. AYLA understands this moment not as an invitation to redefine the practice according to personal preference, but as a responsibility to preserve what has been entrusted to us while remaining attentive to how the tradition is carried forward. We encourage continued support of Sharath Yoga Centre and the lineage as it moves ahead.
At AYLA, we affirm that the path of yoga is not one of self-elevation, but of continual learning. We actively seek guidance from senior teachers with deep knowledge and lived experience, recognizing that true understanding is cultivated through discipline, study, and time. We do not position ourselves as authorities, but as students—committed to learning from those who have walked the path before us.
AYLA is a space for quiet, intentional practice; for community built through shared effort; and for the transmission of knowledge that extends beyond the physical forms of asana. Through humility, consistency, and collective care, we aim to hold space for Ashtanga Yoga as a living tradition—one that continues not because it is reinvented, but because it is practiced sincerely, together.
We warmly welcome new and visiting students who have an established practice or familiarity with the Ashtanga system. Before attending, please email theaylacollective@gmail.com or message us on Instagram to confirm your visit. We look forward to practicing together.
